Aptitude - Time and Distance - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Distance - General Questions (Q.No. 2)
2.
An aeroplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 240 kmph in 5 hours. To cover the same distance in 1 hours, it must travel at a speed of:
300 kmph
360 kmph
600 kmph
720 kmph
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Distance = (240 x 5) = 1200 km.

Speed = Distance/Time

Speed = 1200/(5/3) km/hr.     [We can write 1 hours as 5/3 hours]

Required speed = 1200 x 3 km/hr = 720 km/hr.

1(2/3)is written as 1+(2/3)=(3*1+2)/3=(3+2)/3=5/3.
now we solve s=d/t,
S=1200/(5/3),
S=1200*3/5,
S=720.

Distance = (240*5) = 1200 km.

S = D/T.

Speed = 1200/(5/3) km/hr.

My question where come from (5/3)?

@Sudha, @Satish.

S = 1200/5/3 is correct.
S = 1200*3/5 just for calculation 3is multiplied with 1200.

Distance are same. So, we can write;
D1 = D2.
S1*T1 = S2*T2.
240*5 = S2*5/3,
S2 = 240*3,
S2 = 720kmph.

Those who says answer as 720, why you are taken time as 5/3 hr instead of 1 hr as given in d example.

I have doubt in 5/3.
5*240=1200km
1*(sp)=1200km

.'.Speed=1200km/hr this is correct or not ?

In the question, time is 1 2/3 hours, not one hour so we take it as 5/3 and get the answer as 720.

2 + 3 = 5*1 = 5.

It is in fraction that is why should write need write in fraction form so 5/3.

Here the speed is given in Km/hr and time in hours, why the hours are not converted into mins ?
