Aptitude - Time and Distance - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Distance - General Questions (Q.No. 2)
2.
An aeroplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 240 kmph in 5 hours. To cover the same distance in 1 hours, it must travel at a speed of:
300 kmph
360 kmph
600 kmph
720 kmph
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Distance = (240 x 5) = 1200 km.

Speed = Distance/Time

Speed = 1200/(5/3) km/hr.     [We can write 1 hours as 5/3 hours]

Required speed = 1200 x 3 km/hr = 720 km/hr.

Fundamenta Formula : D=S*T.

Here.

S=240 kmph, T=3 hrs we can find D=240*5=1200.
To find S, S =D/T i.e. (1200*3) /5=720kmph.

Even if the aeroplane travels in the speed of 720km/hr it can the distance of 1152km..... As the nearest answer is 720km/hr.

Here 1+2/3=5/3.

It was given that speed=dis/time,
so, speed= 1200/(5/3),
=1200*3/5,
=720kmph.

Actually this is not speed, it must be the distance. As it is derived from the formula s*t=d. Hope it clears the confusion.

Speed 1=240kmph, time1 = 5hr.
Speed2=x. Time2=5/3.

S1/S2 = T2/T1,
S2 = (240*5)/(5/3),
S2 = 240*3,
S2 = 720kmph.

600 m = 0.6 km => 600/1000,
5 min = 0.0833 hr => 5/60,
Speed = dist/time.
s = 0.6 /0.0833.
= 7.2.

This can also be solved as:

Given d1 = d2.

=> s1*t1 = s2*t2.
240*5 = s2*5/3.

s2 = 240*5*3/5.
s2 = 720 kmph.

I can solve in this way without formulae.

1.2/3 = 1.66.
240 km 5hrs.
Ans :-
5/1.66 = 3.0
So, 240 (3) = 720kmph.

Speed = Distance/Time.
= 1200 ÷ 5/3,
= 1200X3/5,
= 3600/5,
= 720.

Distance = speed × time.
D = 240kmph × 5hrs
D = 1200km.

Then,
Speed = d÷t.
S = 1200km ÷ 1 2/3 hrs.
S = 720kmph.
