A man has some hens and cows. If the number of heads be 48 and the number of feet equals 140, then the number of hens will be:
22
23
24
26
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the number of hens be x and the number of cows be y.

Then, x + y = 48 .... (i)

  and 2x + 4y = 140      x + 2y = 70 .... (ii)

Solving (i) and (ii) we get: x = 26, y = 22.

The required answer = 26.

48*4=192, 192-140=52÷2=26.

Cow=26, Hens=22.

Short cut

Total legs/2 - total head = total no of 4 legs animal.

= 140/2 - 48.
= 70 -48 = 22 four legs animal,

Total 48. So 26 two legs animal means hens here.

It can be solved by;

Total legs/2 - total head = total no of 4 legs animal.

= 140/2 - 48.
= 70 - 48 = 22 four legs animal,

Total 48. So 26 two legs animal means hens here.

No of feet of hens = 48 * 2 = 96,
So no cows legs = 140-96 = 44
No of cows = 44/2 = 22,
No of hens = 48-22 = 26.
