A man has some hens and cows. If the number of heads be 48 and the number of feet equals 140, then the number of hens will be:

Explanation:
Let the number of hens be x and the number of cows be y.
Then, x + y = 48 .... (i)
and 2x + 4y = 140 
x + 2y = 70 .... (ii)
Solving (i) and (ii) we get: x = 26, y = 22.
The required answer = 26.

Easy way of solution.
48 ( All head) *2 = 96 ( Counting only 2 legs for all ) remaining legs are; 140-96=44 (so these legs are cow's legs)
Then divide by 2 ( 2 legs are already counted remain 2 for all cow ).
44/2=22 cows then Hen= 48-22 = 26.

Hi, Use the formula to get the answer.
No of 4 feet animals = Foots -(heads*2)/2.
No of 4 feet animals = Foots -(heads*2)/2.

(48-h)4 + 2h = 140.
-4h + 2h =140-192,
-2h=-52,
h = 26.

2 legs of formula= 2H - L/2.
Solve = 2 * 48 - 140/2
= 96 - 70
