In a mixture 60 litres, the ratio of milk and water 2 : 1. If this ratio is to be 1 : 2, then the quantity of water to be further added is:
20 litres
30 litres
40 litres
60 litres
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Quantity of milk = 60 x 2 litres = 40 litres.
3

Quantity of water in it = (60- 40) litres = 20 litres.

New ratio = 1 : 2

Let quantity of water to be added further be x litres.

Then, milk : water = 40 .
20 + x

Now, 40 = 1
20 + x 2

20 + x = 80

x = 60.

Quantity of water to be added = 60 litres.

(m1*w1)/L1 = (m2*w2)/L2.

(2*1)/60 = (1*2)/L2.

2/60 = 2/L2.

2L2 = 120.

L2 = 60.

Please correct if I am wrong.

The above problem can be rather simply solved by elimination of the Options:

Milk : 40litres.
Water: 20litres.

What value of water would you add to existing water so that it doubles compared to the quantity of milk (40 litres) present in the mixture : 20 + 60 = 80 (which is now double of 40)

Hence 60 litres.

Is there any shortcuts?

Formula = x(a*d-b*c)/c(a+b).

The required water = 60(2*2-1*1)/1(2+1) = 60 lit.

In first condition milk+water=40+20.

Now new ratio is 1:2 means value of water is double from milk now milk is already 40 so the value of water is 80. This means we have to add 60 liters water.

Why 2/3 is used in calculations?

If total Quantity is 60 litres then how will you add quantity of water 60 litres again?

Mixture of milk and water is = 60 liters that is milk:water.

As per given ratio is = 1:2 that is 40:20.

As per asking ratio is = 2:1 that is 20:40.

Further added milk & water = 3:3 that is 60:60.

Total mixture is 60 litres.

1st ratio is 2:1 and the 2nd is 1:2.

So, 1st ratio for milk would be 60x2/3 = 40.

And water is 20(60-40).

2nd ratio is 1:2.

So milk should be 60x1/3 = 20.

And water is 40 according to the ratio.

And we already have 20 litres according to the first ratio. So we only have to 20 more litres to the earlier one and we get a total of 40 (20+20).

So the answer should have been 20 instead of 60. If wrong please correct me.

Its very simple. Given mixture is 60 litres.

Now given ratio is 2:1 and new one is 1:2.

A:B

Old - 2:1.

New - 1:2.

Value of A should be same so multiply 2 in new one.

=> new - 2:4.

Now value of B differs so subtract them.

4-1 = 3.

Now from formula we get:

(60*3)/(2+1).

=> (60*3)/3.

=> 60.
