In a mixture 60 litres, the ratio of milk and water 2 : 1. If this ratio is to be 1 : 2, then the quantity of water to be further added is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Quantity of milk = | ![]() |
60 x | 2 | ![]() |
3 |
Quantity of water in it = (60- 40) litres = 20 litres.
New ratio = 1 : 2
Let quantity of water to be added further be x litres.
Then, milk : water = | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
. |
20 + x |
Now, | ![]() |
40 | ![]() |
= | 1 |
20 + x | 2 |
20 + x = 80
x = 60.
Quantity of water to be added = 60 litres.

Very simple in inverted method says.
a : b = b : a.
i.e a/b = b/a so, answer is 60 the same.

2 : 1.
1 : 2 = 2 : 4, 3parts increases.
3parts = 60
1 : 2 = 2 : 4, 3parts increases.
3parts = 60

Alligation.
Take ratio of milk.
2/3.0.
1/3.
1/3.1/3.
Assume x as the amount of water to be added.
Therefore 60/x = 1/3 * 3/1.
X = 60.

Initial mix i.e, 60Ltr Old ration m : w :: 2 : 1 total parts 2 + 1 = 3parts of 60Ltr = 20Ltr.
Hence milk = 2 * 20 = 40Ltr, & water = 1 * 20 = 20Ltr.
But question is how much further or additional water is added to maintain the New Ratio 1 : 2 i.e, m : w :: 1 : 2 one should get Confused with initial mix i.e, 60Ltr.
Method of Substitution :
Already milk 40Ltr and water 20Ltr question is how much further or additional water is added to maintain the New Ratio 1 : 2.
We have [A]. 20 litres [B].30 litres [C].40 litres [D].60 litres.
Water should be 20 + either A,B,C,D but New Ratio 1 : 2 therefore w = 20 + 60 = 80 hence m:w = 40/80 = 1:2.
I hope you have understood the solution.

Milk = 2/3 * 60 = 40;
Water =1/3 * 60 = 20;
Aadd water = x (suppose)
then, 40/(20 + x) = 1:2.
x = 60 -> answer.
Water =1/3 * 60 = 20;
Aadd water = x (suppose)
then, 40/(20 + x) = 1:2.
x = 60 -> answer.
