Seats for Mathematics, Physics and Biology in a school are in the ratio 5 : 7 : 8. There is a proposal to increase these seats by 40%, 50% and 75% respectively. What will be the ratio of increased seats?
2 : 3 : 4
6 : 7 : 8
6 : 8 : 9
None of these
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Originally, let the number of seats for Mathematics, Physics and Biology be 5x, 7x and 8x respectively.

Number of increased seats are (140% of 5x), (150% of 7x) and (175% of 8x).

140 x 5x , 150 x 7x and 175 x 8x
100 100 100

7x, 21x and 14x.
2

The required ratio = 7x : 21x : 14x
2

14x : 21x : 28x

2 : 3 : 4.

5x/20+5/20*40/100 = 7x/20.

7x/20+7x/20*50/100 = 21x/40.

8x/20+8x/20+75/100 = 7x/10.

Can any one help me is it correct if yes what are the next steps please help me to understand.

40% of 5 = 140/100*5 = 7.

50% of 7 = 150/100*7 = 21/2.

75% of 8 = 175/100*8 = 14.

Now take common 7.

7 (14:21:28) = 2:3:4.

40% of 5 = 140/100 * 5 = 7.
50% of 7 = 150/100 * 7 = 21/2.
75% of 8 = 175/100 * 8 = 14.

Now take common 7.

7(14 : 21 : 28) = 2 : 3 : 4.

@Aparna it is correct and the right way to solve this problem.

After this, you compare the ratio.

7/20 : 21/40 : 7/10.

Now bring the denominator to 40.

14/40 : 21/40 : 28/40.

14 : 21 : 28.

Simplify by 7.
2 : 3 : 4.

Let the seats be 5x, 7x, 8x they are increasing by 40%, 50%, 75%.
5x + 40% of 5x.
= 7x.

7x + 50%of 7x
=10.5x.

8x + 75% of 8x
=14x.
So,
= 7x : 10.5x : 14x.
= 2 : 3 : 4.
