15.
In a bag, there are coins of 25 p, 10 p and 5 p in the ratio of 1 : 2 : 3. If there is Rs. 30 in all, how many 5 p coins are there?
50
100
150
200
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the number of 25 p, 10 p and 5 p coins be x, 2x, 3x respectively.

Then, sum of their values = Rs. 25x + 10 x 2x + 5 x 3x = Rs. 60x
100 100 100 100

60x = 30     x = 30 x 100 = 50.
100 60

Hence, the number of 5 p coins = (3 x 50) = 150.

If and 300 means,

As per the ratio: 100*25 +200*10 +300*5.
= 2500+2000+1500.
=6000 Paise.

So 60Rs came. So that is wrong.

If answer is 150 means,

50*25+100*10+150*5 = 1250+1000+750 = 3000.

Rs 30... So 150 is the correct answer.

Total amount according to ratio is (1x25+2x10+3x5) = 60 paise.

If 60 paise ----> 3000 paise.

Then 5 paise-----> ? (5x3000/60=50).

Hence the answer is : 50 x 3 = 150( here 3 is ratio of 5p).

The right answer is 150.

We can not equate quantity to value e.g 1:2:3 or 1x+2x+3x(Q) = 3000(V).

We should equate value to value e.g 25p 10p 5p or 25x 20x 15x(V) = 3000(V).

that makes 60x=3000 and x=50.

Proof:

With the answer 150 5p coins we get,

1:2:3 = 50 100 150 , 25p 10p 5p respectively makes a value of 3000p and it is logical with the given ratio 1:2:3/50:100:150 [50 coins of 25p] [100 coins of 10p] and [150 coins of 5p].

Whereas, with the answer 300 5p coins we get,

1:2:3 = 20 100 300 , 25p 10p 5p respectively, also makes a value of 3000p but it is illogical with the ratio. It can't be 1:2:3/20:100:300.

Hope you got it :).

My answer came 300 coins.

Rs. 30 = 30*100 = 3000 p.

Ratio = 1:2:3 then 3000*3/6 = 1500 p.

i.e. 1500/5 = 300.

Therefore, there are 300 5p coins.

Isn't it correct? Please explain me.

The biggest confusion here is because of value of coins and number of coins. Now the ratio 1:2:3 given is the number of coins where as 25p 10p and 5p are the value of coins.

Thus,

Value: 25p 10p 5p.

Number of coins: 1*x 2*x 3*x.

Total value: 25x 20x 15x.

Given, 25x+20x+15x=30*100 (rs. 30 converted into paisa).

60x = 3000.

x = 50.

Therefore, number of coins is 3*x.

3*50 = 150.

Let x is the number of 25 paisa coins then 2x and 3x will be for 10 and 5 paisa coins.

Now 30 rupees equal to 30*100 paisa now total paisa equal to x*25+2x*10+3x*5=3000.

60x = 3000.
x = 50.

Now number 5 paisa coin is 3x equal to 3*50 = 150.

Why we have taken 25 and not 125?

In-fact I just went though various solutions to the problem. My question now is, is 300 or 150 the answer? We are confused which is which. So any further explanation?
