On selling 17 balls at Rs. 720, there is a loss equal to the cost price of 5 balls. The cost price of a ball is:
Rs. 45
Rs. 50
Rs. 55
Rs. 60
Answer: Option
Explanation:

(C.P. of 17 balls) - (S.P. of 17 balls) = (C.P. of 5 balls)

C.P. of 12 balls = S.P. of 17 balls = Rs.720.

C.P. of 1 ball = Rs. 720 = Rs. 60.

Consider cp of 1 ball =x
for 17 balls=17x;
loss=cp-sp(here 17balls cost price-17balls selling price)
i.e 17x-720;
for 5 balls cp is 5x;
in the question he give 17 balls loss=cp of 5 balls
i.e 17x-720=5x;
17x-5x=720;
12x=720;
x=720/12;
x=60.

Loss for 17 balls = cp of 5 balls.

=> cp of 17 balls - sp of 17 balls = cp of 5 balls.

=> (cp of 17 balls - cp of 5 balls) = sp of 17 balls.

But sp of 17 balls = 720.

=>cp of 12 balls = 720.

=>cp of 1 ball = 720/12 = 60.

Its given.
(CP*17) - (SP*17) = (CP*5) its loss.
Selling 17 balls at Rs. 720, there is a loss equal to the cost price of 5 balls.

Now consider 1 ball's cost is "x".
(x*17) - (720) = (x*5).
17x-720=5x.
17x-5x=720.
12x=720.
x=720/12.
X=60.

Let cost price of 1 ball=x
then cost price of 17 balls=17x
loss is equal to 5 balls cost price(given in problem)=5x
selling price=c.p-loss=17x-5x=12x
but original selling price=720
.
. . 12x=720
x=60
c.p of 1 ball=60

C.P of 17 balls = x.

Loss = C.P of 5 balls.
1 ball C.P is x/17.
5 balls C.P is 5x/17.
Loss = 5x/17.

17 balls C.P = 17 balls S.P+Loss.

x = 720+5x/17.
12x = 720*17.
x = 60*17.

Then each ball price is (x/17) = ((60*17)/17) = 60.

Let cp for 1 ball = x rs.
sp for 1 ball =720/17 rs.

***please note***(for 17 balls, loss = 5x therefore loss behind 1 ball = 5x/17)
Now, loss over 1 ball = c.p. over 1 ball - sp over 1 ball.
5x/17 = x - 720/17,
x = 60.

Let us assume C. P of 5 balls be 'c'.

Then C.P of 17 balls 17c/5.

NOW, LOSS=C.P of 5 balls.

i.e., (C.P of 17 balls) - (S.P of 17 balls) = C.P of 5 balls.

(17c/5) - (720) = c.

(or) c = 300.

Any queries are welcomed ?

In the question, it is given the that on selling 17 balls at rs 720, the loss is equal to cost prize of 5 balls, but why have we subtracted it from cost prize of 17 balls when it is no where mentioned in the question ?

Let C.P is x then.

According to question condition of loss.

(C.P of 17 balls) - (S.P of 17 balls) = (C.P of 5 balls).

=> (17*x) - 720 = (5*x).

=> 17x - 5x =720.

=> 12x = 720.

x = 720/12.

=> x = 60.

Loss = C.P-S.P.

From given: S.P of 17 balls = 720 R.S.

Loss = C.P of 5 balls.

From 1st equation.

C.P of 5 balls = C.P of 17 balls - S.P of 17 balls.

Let C.P of 1 ball = x.

5x = 17x-720.
12x = 720.
x = 60.
