@Samuel then relative speed gets added up. Its (60+3) instead of (60-3).

When two trains are travelling in the same direction and one passes the other, why is their relative speed found out by subtracting their speeds and by not adding them up?

Time taken to cross a man = x.
Speed of man in m/s = 0.833.
17.5*x = 500 + 0.833*x.
16.66 x = 500.
x = 30.00sec.
Time taken to cross a man = x.

Both are in same direction. So we have to take 63-3=60.
