5.
A train passes a station platform in 36 seconds and a man standing on the platform in 20 seconds. If the speed of the train is 54 km/hr, what is the length of the platform?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Speed = | ![]() |
54 x | 5 | ![]() |
18 |
Length of the train = (15 x 20)m = 300 m.
Let the length of the platform be x metres.
Then, | x + 300 | = 15 |
36 |
x + 300 = 540
x = 240 m.

Instead of multiplying 15*20.
We can directly do it by method.
Firstly converting speed = 54*5/18 = 15 m.
Then as we know speed = distance/time.
Since distance = speed *time = 15(36-20) = 15*16 = 240m.

Hi 36*54*5/18=540-> which is nothing but the total length includes train and plat form....
and 20*54*5/18=300 -> which is lenth includes train and up to man ..... and taking difference 540-300=240
and 20*54*5/18=300 -> which is lenth includes train and up to man ..... and taking difference 540-300=240

If the man stand at the head side then the length of train is 300m as well as the length of the platform is 240 m and if the man stand at any point of the platform then the length of the platform is 540.

Is it necessary to calculate the length of the train?
We can do it directly as:
distance = speed * time
Let x be the length of the platform , which train crosses in 36s.
x = 54 *5/18 *36 = 240m
We can do it directly as:
distance = speed * time
Let x be the length of the platform , which train crosses in 36s.
x = 54 *5/18 *36 = 240m

Length of the train relative to the station is 36*15=540,
Length of the train relative to man@20sec is
20*15=300.
Now,
Length of the train relative to station subtract the length of man 540-300=240.
Length of the train relative to man@20sec is
20*15=300.
Now,
Length of the train relative to station subtract the length of man 540-300=240.

In this problem, it is considered that the man is standing at the extreme end. That's the reason length of the train is calculated as 15*20. What if the man is standing in the middle of the platform.

I think we don't need 20 secs a train travelling at 54km/hr took.
36 secs to pass a platform means that it covered a distance equal to. Platform in 36 secs simply convert it and the answer is 540m.

I did it like this.
First, while train passing thru platform in 36 sec = 15 x 36 = 540,
Second while train passing thru man in 20sec = 15 x 20 = 300,
Now, the relative length 540 - 300 = 240.
First, while train passing thru platform in 36 sec = 15 x 36 = 540,
Second while train passing thru man in 20sec = 15 x 20 = 300,
Now, the relative length 540 - 300 = 240.

Easily way.
Train speed is 54 in KM/HR so KM/HR = 1000 M /3600 S = 10/36 = 5/18 * 54 train speed = 15 M/S.
Train crossed in 36 man in 20 so we can minus both so 36 - 20 = 16.
16 * 15 = 240.

16 * 15 = 240.

Here, the length of the train is more than the length of the platform, how can a train be fit on that platform?
Platform length is 240m and Train length is 300m. Please explain me about it.
