Why did'nt we multiply the speed by the terms 5/18?
Ie. 240 = (x * 5/18) * 24.
x = 36 so the speed of the train will be 36 m/sec.

I think it's like this that if the train will pass a man means pass its own length.
So velocity, s = 240/24 = 10 m/s.
Let it passes then platform in x sec.
10 = 240 + 650/24 + x.
So, x = 65.

length of the train = speed * time.
So speed = 240 ÷ 24,
=10 m/s.
In case of passing a platform,
Length of train + length of platform = speed * time.
then,
240 + 650 = 10 * time,
So, time = (240 + 650)/10,
= 89m/s.
