Discussion Forum : Problems on Ages - General Questions (Q.No. 1)
1.
Father is aged three times more than his son Ronit. After 8 years, he would be two and a half times of Ronit's age. After further 8 years, how many times would he be of Ronit's age?
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let Ronit's present age be x years. Then, father's present age =(x + 3x) years = 4x years.
![]() |
(4x + 8) = | 5 | (x + 8) |
2 |
8x + 16 = 5x + 40
3x = 24
x = 8.
Hence, required ratio = | (4x + 16) | = | 48 | = 2. |
(x + 16) | 24 |

Guys it is very simple question I ll try to make you understand. Father is more than three times not three time so it will be 3x + x = 4x.
Then after 8 years father age will be 2.5 times than Ronit age= 5/2.
So 4x + 8/x + 8 = 5/2.
x=8.
Again after 8 years ratio will be 4x + 8 + 8/x + 8 + 8.
Let put the value of x so it will be = 4*8 + 8 + 8/8 + 8 + 8 = 48/24 = 2.
Then after 8 years father age will be 2.5 times than Ronit age= 5/2.
So 4x + 8/x + 8 = 5/2.
x=8.
Again after 8 years ratio will be 4x + 8 + 8/x + 8 + 8.
Let put the value of x so it will be = 4*8 + 8 + 8/8 + 8 + 8 = 48/24 = 2.

Now review this Concept if you absorb it. It will be very helpful,
3:1.
5:2.
As the above ratio is not proportion so to proportionate it.
(3:1)*3 => 9:3.
(5:2)*2 => 10:4.
(9-10) = 1 but actual its 8 year difference.
Hence x = 8.
Now multiply 8 to the above ratio (not the original one but after proportionate one) and get answer.
It seems lengthy but it hardly take 1 minute to get answer hope you enjoy, ask me in detail if any.

Father's age is = 4x, because.
Let the age of child is x.
And given in question is age of father 3x time of the child age.
Then x+3x = 4x.
Let the age of child is x.
And given in question is age of father 3x time of the child age.
Then x+3x = 4x.

@Neeraj you are wrong.
If it is 3x time of the child age then it is 3x.
But it is mentioned 3x times more than the sons age then it is 4x.
(3x+x).
If it is 3x time of the child age then it is 3x.
But it is mentioned 3x times more than the sons age then it is 4x.
(3x+x).

How is it (4x + 8) = 5/2(x +8)?
It should be multiplied in 5/2(4x +8). Because he is the age of father.
Any body explain?
