Six years ago, the ratio of the ages of Kunal and Sagar was 6 : 5. Four years hence, the ratio of their ages will be 11 : 10. What is Sagar's age at present?
16 years
18 years
20 years
Cannot be determined
None of these
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the ages of Kunal and Sagar 6 years ago be 6x and 5x years respectively.

Then, (6x + 6) + 4 = 11
(5x + 6) + 4 10

10(6x + 10) = 11(5x + 10)

5x = 10

x = 2.

Sagar's present age = (5x + 6) = 16 years.

Clearly giventhat, 6 years ago the ratios of ages of kunal and sagar was 6:5, so we have to add 6.

No need to crack ur head just read the question, write the equation and solve it (question speaks itself)::
Ist condition :-

k-6/s-6 = 6/5 ..................I

IInd conditin :-

k+4/s+4 = 11/10 ...................II

so from I & II we got :-

k = 18
and s= 16 (required answer...)

1st step:

Six years ago, the ratio of the ages of Kunal & Sagar was 6 : 5 means 6x & 5x respectively i.e. 6x+6/5x+6 (added hear six because given "Six years ago").

2nd Step:.

Four years hence, means after 4 years, the ratio will be 11/10.

So we add hear 4 which mean.

(6x+6) +4/ (5x+6) +4 = 11/10.

6x+10/5x+10 = 11/10.

10 (6x+10) =11 (5x+10).

60x+100=55x+110.

60x-55x=110-100.

5x=10.

X=2.

3rd step:

Sagar's present age = 5x+6.

=5 (2) +6.

=16 years.

Hope you understand friends.

Well in question they mentioned six years ago! so (6x+6) / (5x+6).

But they didn't mention that after 4 years from present age or from six years ago I hope the data given is insufficient.

Why we subtract 6 years from answer. Because we find answer for 6 years ago and also 4 years hence?

Karin said:   1 decade ago
We are supposed to calculate his present age so before 6 years his age be (6x) so after 6 years his age turns to (6x+6). They also mentioned four years hence so it is (6x+6) + 4.

It makes me confuse. Here in the question said 6 years ago. It means deduction?

Put it this way. The ratio of their ages 6 years ago was 6:5 and then come 6 year ahead to present time so there will be an addition of 6 years and then from this present moment again moving 4 years ahead that means adding 4 years. Hence the two additions.
