In an election between two candidates, one got 55% of the total valid votes, 20% of the votes were invalid. If the total number of votes was 7500, the number of valid votes that the other candidate got, was:
2700
2900
3000
3100
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Number of valid votes = 80% of 7500 = 6000.

Valid votes polled by other candidate = 45% of 6000

= 45 x 6000 = 2700.
100

We can also do it as ..
There is only 80% votes are valid so
80% of 7500 = 6000 are total valid votes
and one candidate got 55% of total votes i.e.6000*55/100=3300( votes of one candidate )

So other candidate got votes 6000-3300=2700 votes.

The total number of votes is 7500 is it including that 20% or excluding that, if so then we have 20% invalid than why are we 100-55, shouldn't we be doing 80-55 subtracting the invalid once?

And if that's the thing the options are wrong.

How can you say that there are 20% total invalid votes? According to me, 20% invalid votes are only for candidate A. Because it is not specified in the question. That these are total invalid votes or votes polled to the candidate no. 1.

80% of the votes are valid, while 20% are not valid.

So, 80% of 7500 is 6000, while 20% of 7500 is 1500.
From these 80% valid votes (6000), 'A' has 55% of the valid votes in it (3300), while 'B' has 45% of the valid votes in it (2700).

A and B candidates participated in an election. 20% of voters did not participate in the voting. 10% of polled votes are invalid. A received 50% votes of polling and winner by a margin of 600. Total new of voters in a village are?

Why cant we do in this way?

First considering the valid votes 80%of 7500=6000, 1st person's votes are 55% so, 55% of 6000= 3300, now subtracting it from total valid votes we get the second persons votes=2900

Here 1st person already got 55% of "VALID VOTES". 20% of total votes are invalid. So only 80% are valid. Already 55% went. So 2nd person only gets 30% of remaining valid votes. (30/100) *6000 = 1800 votes.

How 45% valid vote left?

In question it is said that 20% of the total vote is invalid then 80% valid votes where remaining and if one got 55% valid vote then other on will have (80-55) % = 25% valid vote.

7500 is the total vote.

And 20% are invalid hence, 1500 votes are invalid then 6000 is a valid vote and one gets 55% then another gets 45% of the valid vote it means 45% of 6000 so the answer becomes 2700.

Why didn't we do this one by in this method?

Total voters = 7500.

In that 20% for non valid, 55% for one group.

So totally 75% were gone the remaining 25% for second candidate.

Shall we do like this ?
