588 apples
600 apples
672 apples

Let total no of apples = 100.

They give that, he sells 40% apples so, remaining apple he had is 100-40 = 60 apples.
So,
60 = 420.
100 = x,
By dividing,
60/100 = 420/x,
X = (420 * 100)/60.
X =700,
Ans: 700.

Apples sold by the seller = 40%
Let the total = 100%.

Remaining =100-40 which is 60%.
Then according to the question after selling 40% of apples 420 apples are remaining.
Therefore 60% =420.
So 100 /60*420 = 700 apples.
Let's check,
40/100*700.
= 420 apples.
So the answer is 700.

100%-40% = 60%.
60% = 420,
100% = x.
60x = 420 * 100.
x =700.

Another way is;

Let x be the total apples.

So, he sold x-420 apples which accounts for 40% of the total apples hence,
40/100 = (x - 420)/x.
After solving,
x = 700.

Let total apple is X.

When 40% sell means;
X * 40/100.

So, X * 40/100 =(X-420),
4x=10x-4200,
X=700.

@sonu
the ans. is 102.22
45/100*x=30/100*90=30/100*210
9x/20+27=63
9x/20=63-27
x=(46*20)/9
x=102.22

APPLES SOLD = 40%
SO REMAINING APPLES = 60%
60% = 420
FULL (100%) = (100/60) X 420
= 700
ANS: 700 APPLES
