60% is 420 then,
1% is 420/60/100 = 700.

The original apple x.

40% selled
420 apples left
100%-40% = 60%,
So, 420 is 60%.
60% of x = 420,
60/100 * x = 420,
3/5 * x = 420,
x = 420 * 5/3,
x = 700.
The answer is 700 apples.

@All
Total apple = 100%
sold = 40%
Remaining = 60% = 420,
Now, calculate 1 % of 420 = 420/60 = 7.
40 * 7 = 280.
Then, the total apple he had = 480 + 280 = 700.

420/x * 100 = 60,
420/x = 3/5,
420.5 = 3.x,
2100 = 3.x,
2100/3 = x,
700 = x.

60% = 420,
100% = x,

Cross multiple:
x= 420 * 100/60,
= 700.

@All.

Total (%) = 100%,
Shelling(%) = 40%,
Balance (%) = 60% = 420.
60% = 420.
30% = 210
10% = 70
40% -> 30% + 10% = 280
40% + 60% = 280 + 420 = 700
280 apples sold and remain 420 apples.

So, total 700 apples.

Suppose he has x apples.

He has sold 40% and the remaining apples are 420.
40% apples = total apple - remaining apple.
= x - 420.
x - 420 = 40/100 * x.
x = 700.

Total = 100%.
Sell apples = 40%.
Balance 60%.
60%= 420.
100=x (cross Multiplication).
x * 60 = 100 * 420,
x = 700.
Total Apples = 700.
