It's very simple,
Suppose he had 'x' apples,
Here x = 420.
Then (100 - 40)% = 60%.
Now required solution,
60/100 *x= 420,
x = (420 *100/60) = 700.

So, multiply it like this 7×40%= 280.

Sold = 40%
The remaining apples 60% which is 420 apples.
