Gauri went to the stationers and bought things worth Rs. 25, out of which 30 paise went on sales tax on taxable purchases. If the tax rate was 6%, then what was the cost of the tax free items?
Rs. 15
Rs. 15.70
Rs. 19.70
Rs. 20
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the amount taxable purchases be Rs. x.

Then, 6% of x = 30
100

x = 30 x 100 = 5.
100 6

Cost of tax free items = Rs. [25 - (5 + 0.30)] = Rs. 19.70

@Scarlet

Answer for the 1st question is;

Let us take cost price of table (cp1)=x;
The cost price of chairs(cp2)=400-x;
Selling chairs at a loss is 10%: 10 = (loss/cp2).
10 = ((cp2-sp2)/cp2).
10 = ((400-x)-sp2)/400-x (cp2=400-x).
sp2 = -9(400-x) (sp2=selling price of chairs).

Selling table at profit is 10%: 10=(profit/cp1) .
10=(sp1-cp1)/cp1.
10=(sp1-x)/x (cp1=x).
sp1=11x (sp1=selling price of table).

Selling total at a profit is 5%: 5=(profit/total)
5= (sp-cp)/cp
5= (sp1+sp2)-400/400
(sp1+sp2)-400=2000
sp1+sp2=2400
11x+9x-3600=2400 ( sp1=11x , sp2=-9(400-x) )
20x=6000
x=300
The chair cost price is(cp2) = 400-300 = 100.
The cost price of chairs is $100.
The cost price of table is(x) $300.

Here 25Rs includes(Non taxable amount+taxable amount+Sales Tax paid).

Tax rate is 6%on which tax paid is 30paise(30/100).
If 6% is 30/100, then for 100%(which is taxable amount) =?.
taxable amount=30paisa(or 30/100)*100/6=5rs.
So, Here 25 - (5 + 0.30) = 19.70 Is the answer.

Here, total things worth is 25rs.
30 Paisa means our tax to the government,
And the tax rate is 6% of tax-free products.

So, our tax is dependents on the tax rate of free products.
Let assume price of free item is 'x'.
ie. x*6% = 30/100 (30 Paisa converting into ruppes).
x = 5.

Total worth = tax free product + government tax on product + our tax.
25 = x + 5 + 0.3 ( in ruppes),
25 - 5.3 = x,
19.7 = x.

The answer should be option D.

We get Rs. 5 as the number of taxable items which includes the tax of Rs 0.3.
Then why should we add that tax of Rs. 0.3 again in the last equation as Rs.5 contains the tax of Rs. 0.3 already.

Therefore, the cost of tax-free items should be = Rs.(25-5) = Rs.20.

Hope you all understood.
