Gauri went to the stationers and bought things worth Rs. 25, out of which 30 paise went on sales tax on taxable purchases. If the tax rate was 6%, then what was the cost of the tax free items?
Rs. 15
Rs. 15.70
Rs. 19.70
Rs. 20
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the amount taxable purchases be Rs. x.

Then, 6% of x = 30
100

x = 30 x 100 = 5.
100 6

Cost of tax free items = Rs. [25 - (5 + 0.30)] = Rs. 19.70

Hi,
Let's assume,
Price of non-taxable item --) X
Price of taxable item --) Y
Tax Amount --) Z
Gauri gave total amount Rs.25
So,
X+Y+Z = 2500 ( amount in Paise) ----(A)
6% of Price of taxable item = Tax Amount
Here tax amount is 30 Paise.
So,
6Y/100 = 30 ---(B)
Therefore Y = 500
We have Y = 500 and Z= 30
Put these in first equation (A)
X + 500 + 30 = 2500
X = 1970
So X value is 1970 Paise.
Price of non taxable item is Rs. 19.70.
Use equations whenever possible.
Have a good day.

@All.

At first, I understood both the problems that is why should we include 0.30 at the end and why shouldn't we!

But why do we equate 6% of taxable items to 0.30(6%t.a=0.30) as 0.30 is just sales tax on the taxable amount and we normally equate this when tax paid is 0.30 paise right!so anyone helps me out why did we equate.

I have solved this problem by this thought process-
tax=6%,
tax paid=0.30,
let x be taxable purchases,
so,
6/100*x=0.30 paise,
x=5,
and thus 25-5=20.

Please help me why should we equate 6% ts to 0.30 if 0.3 is the sales tax and not the tax amount originally.

But it is written that the tax of 30 paise was paid out of Rs. 25.

So, the tax amount+taxable amount+ non taxable amount=Rs. 25.
actually, Gauri bought things worth Rs.25-0.30=24.70 and then she had to pay 30 paise as a tax making the total cost Rs.25.

6 percent of taxable = Total tax = 5.
Total tax = Sales tax + Misc tax.

Since, she already accounted for the sales tax of 30p, in the beginning, we add at the end.
