When investments of all the partners are 'for the same time', the gain or loss or liability is distributed among the partners in the ratio of their investments.
Let's assume that K is not variable, and K = 1, 000.
Therefore, A's investment = 85K*12/12.
Therefore, B's investment = 42.5K*T/12.
Where T = TIME PERIOD IN MONTHS.
=> A : B = (85K*12/12):(42.5K*T/12).
=> A : B = 85K*12:42.5K*T.
=> A : B = 85K*12:42.5K*T.
=> A : B = 2*12:T.
=> Share of Profit at end of 1 year.
=> 2*12:T = 3:1.
=> 2*12/3 = T.
=> T = 8 months.
Question asked, 'For how much period does B join?'
It did not ask, 'AFTER how much period does B join?'
Therefore, B joined in partnership for 8 months.

@Anjali.
In the question profits are given for a year. So, A has done the business throughout the year.
@Vidya.
Yes, In the question we need to know contribution of B. i.e;He worked for 8 months. So he joined after 4 months.

For those who are getting newer as 4 months. It is the time after which B joined A and question is asking for my time B worked with A. So answer would be 12-4=8 months.

The answer we have got i.e. 8 is the number of months, which B contributed which means he joined 12-8=4 months later right?
Please confirm.

It would be 4. Contribution of B for 8 months is 1/3 of Contribution of A for 12 month. It clearly indicates that B joined after 4 month.

A = 8500 year 12 months.
A:B = (85000*12):(42500*y).
= 3:1.
3:1 = (85000*12):(42500*y).
3/1 = 85000*12/y*42500.
==> y = 8.
A:B = (85000*12):(42500*y).
= 3:1.
3:1 = (85000*12):(42500*y).
3/1 = 85000*12/y*42500.
==> y = 8.

85000 * 12 = 1020000,
1020000/3 = 340000,
340000/42500 = 8.
1020000/3 = 340000,
340000/42500 = 8.
