At what time between 4 and 5 o'clock will the hands of a watch point in opposite directions?
45 min. past 4
40 min. past 4
50 4 min. past 4
11
54 6 min. past 4
11
Answer: Option
Explanation:

At 4 o'clock, the hands of the watch are 20 min. spaces apart.

To be in opposite directions, they must be 30 min. spaces apart.

Minute hand will have to gain 50 min. spaces.

55 min. spaces are gained in 60 min.

50 min. spaces are gained in 60 x 50 min. or 54 6 min.
55 11

Required time = 54 6 min. past 4.

At 4'O clock ---------> 20 mins spaces.

To be in the opposite direction, they must have 30 mins spaces.

So, clock follows the only clockwise direction that's why it has to gain 50 mins spaces apart to be in the opposite direction.

55 mins spaces ----------------> 60 mins.
50 mins spaces---------------> 60/55*50 = 54(6/11)min.

So, the answer is 54(6/11)min past 4.

Step 1: Fix the hour hand to the starting time given i.e. here in this case at 4.
Step 2: Count the min spaces for the min hand to be in a straight line but in the opposite direction of 4 and denote it by m.
Step 3: In this case, the min hand has to be on 10 to be in the opposite side of 4 hence m = 50 min spaces.
Step 4: Use the formula: 12m/11 = 12*50/11 = 600/11 = 54 6/11.
