Directions to Solve
Each of the questions given below consists of a statement and / or a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statement(s) is / are sufficient to answer the given question. Read the both statements and
- Give answer (A) if the data in Statement I alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in Statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question.
- Give answer (B) if the data in Statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in Statement I alone are not sufficient to answer the question.
- Give answer (C) if the data either in Statement I or in Statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question.
- Give answer (D) if the data even in both Statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.
- Give answer(E) if the data in both Statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.
1.
The average age of P, Q, R and S is 30 years. How old is R? | |
I. | The sum of ages of P and R is 60 years. |
II. | S is 10 years younger than R. |
Answer: Option
Explanation:
P + Q + R + S = (30 x 4) P + Q + R + S = 120 .... (i)
I. P + R = 60 .... (ii)
II. S = (R - 10) .... (iii)
From (i), (ii) and (iii), we cannot find R.
Correct answer is (D)

I think R age 35 is correct i.e option A is Suffitant. I know this is assumption, but if follow the given statement, I have found my answer.
p+q+r+s=30*4 = 120....(i).
I. p+r = 60...(ii).
II. let age of r be x years then age of s = (x-10)...(iii).
Now using all the equations x+(x-10) = 60.
i.e 2x = 70.
x = 35.
If, I am wrong then define the assumption, meaning.
p+q+r+s=30*4 = 120....(i).
I. p+r = 60...(ii).
II. let age of r be x years then age of s = (x-10)...(iii).

x = 35.

See here theme of the concept is whether you can find the ans frm given thesis and ofcourse u can so frm 3 statements we can clearly understand that p+q=60 and p+q+r+s=120 so r+s=60and given 3rd st as s=r-10 and fr this we can find r-s=10 so solving both we get r=35. So answer is option E.

p+q+r+s=30*4=120 ----> (i)
I. p+r=60 ----> (ii).
II. let age of r be x years then age of s=(x-10) ----> (iii)
Now using all the equations x+(x-10) = 60,
i.e 2x = 70.
x=35.
Hence,age of r=35 yrs and age of s=25 yrs.
Hence from the given options, the correct answer is (E).

From statement 1, P+R = 60.
& statement 2, S = R-10.
Given, P+Q+R+S=120
From st 1, 60+Q+S=120;
Q+S=60.
From st 2, S=R-10;
Q+R-10=60;
Q+R=70.
WE CAN'T PROCEED FURTHER.
SO, OPTION IS (E).
& statement 2, S = R-10.
Given, P+Q+R+S=120
From st 1, 60+Q+S=120;
Q+S=60.
From st 2, S=R-10;
Q+R-10=60;
Q+R=70.

P+Q+R+S = 30*4.
P+Q+R+S = 120.
Given in stmt I P+Q = 60.
Hence R+S=60.
GIVEN IN STATEMENT II.
S = (R-10).
NOW R+(R-10) = 60.
2R-10 = 60.
2R = 70.
R = 35.
HENCE E IS CORRECT OPTION.
P+Q+R+S = 120.

There is, P+Q+R+S=120 ---> (1)
P+R=60 ---> (2)
S=(R"10) ---> (3)
From 1),2),3) we can't find R because there is an error in this assumption, that's Q. So option (D) is correct.

Here, R may vary from 25, 30, 35 and 40.
If there is Q, then we can define the exact value of R, if not the answer would be an option (D),
Thank you.

@All.
Here's the explanation for the answer.
p+q+r+s/4 = 30,
p+q+r+s = 120,
p+q = 60,
then r+s = 60,
2r-10 = 60.
r = 35.
Thus option E is correct.
