Directions to Solve

Each of these questions is followed by three statements. You have to study the question and all the three statements given to decide whether any information provided in the statement(s) is redundant and can be dispensed with while answering the given question.

1.

What is the area of the given rectangle?

I.

Perimeter of the rectangle is 60 cm.

II.

Breadth of the rectangle is 12 cm.

 III.

Sum of two adjacent sides is 30 cm.

I only
II only
I and II only
II and III only
II and either I or III
Answer: Option
Explanation:

From I and II, we can find the length and breadth of the rectangle and therefore the area can be obtained.

So, III is redundant.

Also, from II and III, we can find the length and breadth and therefore the area can be obtained.

So, I is redundant.

Correct answer is "II and either I or III".

Can anybody explain, how 2 is redundant? I found it completely useful.

The question asked here is "Which statement/s are redundant. So either statement I or III can be redundant (for which there is no option). The most appropriate answer would be "[A] I only".

However, the answer given here is telling us which statement is necessary!

The answer to the question can be found using any 2 of the three. Then how can the any 1 of the options be chosen as redundant ?

Jitendra said:   1 decade ago
This answer is wrong because we found the value with combination of I+II & II+III. It is not redundant.

This answer is wrong in place of finding what is redundant you have you have answered what is/are necessary!By the given logic II is essential in both combinations- I+II & II+III.It is not redundant.

l+b=30

So perimeter=2(l+b)=2*30=60 i.e. given so only 1 and 3 rd is correct

Kamal said:   1 decade ago
If first and second is find then we also find area of wall

because we know 2*(l+b)then l+b is given.

In General perimeter of a rectangle is ]
1....2(l+b)=60;
2...b=12;
3...(l+b)=30;
we cant get any l and b values by usign 1 an 2 statements
we can get answer by taking 2 and either 1 or 3

Perimeter of a rectangle is 2(L+B),as per 1st and 2nd statement
Perimeter is 60cm and Breath is 12 cm then
Perimeter=2(L+B)
60=2(L+12)
L=(60/2)-12
L=18
now we can find the area of rectangle by using formula
Area=LxB
that is 12x18=216
