In what ratio must water be mixed with milk to gain 16% on selling the mixture at cost price?
1 : 6
6 : 1
2 : 3
4 : 3
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let C.P. of 1 litre milk be Re. 1.

S.P. of 1 litre of mixture = Re.1, Gain = 50 %.
3

C.P. of 1 litre of mixture = 100 x 3 x 1 = 6
350 7

By the rule of alligation, we have:

C.P. of 1 litre of water C.P. of 1 litre of milk
0 Mean Price
Re. 6
7
Re. 1

Ratio of water and milk = 1 : 6 = 1 : 6.
7 7

Gain%=16 2/3 which means 1/6.
Gain% = sp/cp.
So,
sp = 1, cp = 6
Ratio = 1:6.

According to question,
Millk = 100 ,
Water = 50/3,
Ratio = 50/3 : 100 = 1 : 6.

@Yuvraj : (16*3+2)/3 = (48+2)/3 = 50/3.

Thats how a mixed fraction is solved.

If 100 is cost price and sp then why do we add 50/3 with cp? Please explain.

Simply,

16.66% water to be mixed in 100% milk.
In surd, 16.666/100 = 1/6.

1/6=16 * 2/3%.

So take cost price is 100%.
and 1 : 1/6 = 6:1.

Simple method.

% always denote to 100.

So, 50/3 : 100 = 1/6.
