Discussion Forum : Syllogism - Syllogism 1 (Q.No. 13)
Directions to Solve

In each of the following questions two statements are given and these statements are followed by two conclusions numbered (1) and (2). You have to take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only (1) conclusion follows
  • (B) If only (2) conclusion follows
  • (C) If either (1) or (2) follows
  • (D) If neither (1) nor (2) follows and
  • (E) If both (1) and (2) follow.

13.

Statements: All buildings are chalks. No chalk is toffee.

Conclusions:

  1. No building is toffee
  2. All chalks are buildings.

Only (1) conclusion follows
Only (2) conclusion follows
Either (1) or (2) follows
Neither (1) nor (2) follows
Both (1) and (2) follow

I think option D is correct. Only all buildings are chalks, not all the chalks are building, So conclusion 2 is false. For conclusion 1 no building is toffee is wrong because there are also chalks and buildings inside the chalks in the ven diagram, so no chalk is toffee is right but no building is toffee is wrong.

So, the answer is option D clearly.

All building are chalk but it is not mentioned that all chalk is building for eg. We say all apples are fruit but we know that all fruits are not apple. So 2 is not. And if we come to the 1st one building and has no relation with toffee given so that's why no building is toffee.

Is there any relation (see the diagram) between toffee and buildings? No, not at all. So, conclusion: 1 is true. Now, given that, all buildings are chalks, not all chalks are buildings. So, conlusion: 2 is wrong. Therefore, Option A is right.

Hay guys answer is E. Because All buildings chicks is parallel possibility to all chicks are buildings so conclusion 2 fallows as per above diagram conclusion 1 always fallows so option is both fallows this is 100% correct don't get confuse.

I agree with D because for conclusion 2 it is already wrong with the basic Venn diagram provided. And for conclusion 1 it is a 'NO'conclusion that is we can draw another possible Venn diagram against No Toffee is Building. Thus it is D.

I think 1 is correct as given no chalk is toffee and we see buildings are chalks so no building is toffee.

And for conclusion 2 it's wrong as all buildings are chalk but all chalk can't be buildings.

I think option D is correct because conclusion may be correct may not be correct but we can't say it's definitely true. So we can't say any conclusion is true. Think in this way and help me out.

Yes only 1 follow it is clear when you draw Venn diagram and friends if all the buildings are chalks it doesn't mean that all chalks are buildings because converse is not true in this case.

I think answer will be option A, because if you observe ven diagram, it is clear that only some part of chalks represents buildings. So, conclusion 2 is not true.

Hope you can understand.

I think answer is correct. In statement already mentioned that no chalk is toffee & since buildings comes inside chalk. So we can say conclusion 1 follows.
