There are two series in the given question.
1. 89, 86, 85, 83.
2. 78, 80, 82.
It can be seen that in the 1st series except form the 1st term, each term can be obtained by subtracting 2 from the previous term. So the term next to 89 is 87 and thus we get 85 and 83 as the other terms of the series.
So 87 should be placed in the place of 86.
