Verbal Reasoning - Series Completion - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Series Completion - Section 1 (Q.No. 11)
Directions to Solve

Choose the correct alternative that will continue the same pattern and replace the question mark in the given series.

11.
3, 4, 7, 7, 13, 13, 21, 22, 31, 34, ?
42
43
51
52
Answer: Option
Explanation:

The given sequence is a combination of two series :

I. 3, 7, 13, 21, 31, ? and II. 4, 7, 13, 22, 34

The pattern in I is + 4, + 6, + 8, + 10,.....

The pattern in II is + 3, + 6, + 9, + 12,.....

So, missing term = 31 + 12 = 43.

In first pattern, 3 7 13 21 31.

7-3 = 4,
13-7 = 6,
21-13 = 8,
31-21 = 10.

SO in this pattern we get differences of 4 6 8 10.

Similarly in pattern second, 4 7 13 22 34.

7-4 = 3,
13-7 = 6,
22-13=9,
34-22=12.

We get differences of 3 6 9 12.

As we can see in the sequence that now we have to find the no in series which contains 31 number i.e. first pattern. Ok.

So we already have differences of 4 6 8 and 10 now we can easily guess its no. 12 which is missing so just add 12+31 n we will get 43.

Hope this solution will end all your confusion :).

Because, the number which present here twice, there is no equal difference in the series.so we dividing the number series into two parts.

We need to find the missing number,so in that two pattern we are selecting the pattern 1.

3,7,13,21,31,?.

We are now finding difference 3-7, 7-13, 13-21, 21-31.

Finally we are getting even numbers while equalizing.

31-?=12
?=12+31.
?=43 = answer.

Here, in 1st pattern 3,7,13,21,31,? & in 2nd pattren 4,7,13,22,34
Here in 1st pattern, 1st no+6 and then no is increased by 2 i.e.+6,+8,+10,+12......

Here, in 2nd pattern 4,7,13,22,34
Here in 2nd pattern, 1st no is added by+3 and then and then increased by 3
i.e. +3,+6,+9,+12,....

In this question, there are two mixed series but we have to pick up only one which starts from the first digit, third, sixth, ninth, Twelfth

Take the difference of Alternative numbers that is;
3 - 7 = +4,
7 - 13 = +6,
13 - 21 = +8,
21 - 31 = +10,
31 - ? = +12.

Therefore 31+12= 43.

3, 4, 7, 7, 13, 13, 21, 22, 31, 34, ?

1) 3, 7, 13, 21, 31
And 2) 4, 7, 22, 34.

The formula is (+4, +6, +8, +10. ).

Example:.

3+4= 7.
7+6= 13.
13 + 8=21.
21+10= 31.
31+ 12= 43.
The answer is = 43.

First pattern is adding the number which is multiple of 2 and second pattern is adding the number which is multiple of 3.
