The best way to find the direction is to follow the arrow marks thinking that you are in the center and then find the direction in this case when he moved towards south 35m i.e. the arrow is downwards thinking you in the center we can find right or left.

According to me Dexter explain right. Since when a person start to walk/move towards north then his left will point to west and right to East. So no point of being confused.

How are the directions assumed here in all the questions?

I find it wrong because the left of north is always east which here is taken as west. In all the questions east is considered as west and west is taken as east which is not correct as per my knowledge.
