Directions to Solve

In each of the following problems, there is one question and three statements I, II and III given below the question. You have to decide whether the data given in the statements is sufficient to answer the question. Read all the statements carefully and find which of the statements is/are sufficient to answer the given question. Choose the correct alternative in each question.

1.

Question: What is Suman's rank from the top in a class of forty students ?

Statements:

1. Suman is 3 ranks below Deepak from the top.
2. Deepak's rank from the bottom is 23.
3. Suman is 3 ranks above Deepak from the bottom.

Any two of the three
Only I and II
Only II and III
All I, II and III
Only II and either I or III
Explanation:

From II, we conclude that in a class of 40, Deepak ranks 23rd from the bottom i.e. 18th from the top.

From I and II, we find that Suman is 3 ranks below 18th rank from the top i.e. she ranks 21st from the top.

From II and III, we find that Suman is 3 ranks above 23rd rank from the bottom

i.e. she ranks 20th from the bottom or 21st from the top.

How it is E? Please explain.

Answer is E : Only II and Either I or III

Please check the conjunction words used here in the option. [AND, OR]

Only II and -> which means option 2 is mandatory.
Either I or III -> which means either 1st or 3rd statement is required with the 2nd statement.

Right @Temi.

Why Not A?

Even I & III are sufficient.

@All.

I think the given Question is wrong if the answer is E because the question wants Suman's rank from the top.

By I : Suman is 3 below to Deepak
By II : Deepak is 23rd from bottom (Mean Deepak's rank from top is 17 by 40-23 = 17 and Suman is 3 ranks below than she will be on 20th rank).

By III :Suman is above from Deepak's rank from bottom (Mean Suman is 3 ranks above from Deepak (17th rank).

So, Suman's should be on 13 rank as per this statements but statement I says Suman is below to Deepak and deepak has 17th rank it means suman should be on 20th rank from top).

Correct me, if I am wrong.
