Give answer

  • (A) If the data in statement I alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question
  • (B) If the data in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement I alone are not sufficient to answer the question
  • (C) If the data either in statement I alone or in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question
  • (D) If the data given in both statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question and
  • (E) If the data in both statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.

Question: Can Ritesh retire from office X in January 2006, with full pension benefits ?

Statements:

  1. Ritesh will complete 30 years of service in office X in April 2000 and desires to retire.
  2. As per office X rules, an employee has to complete minimum 30 years of service and attain age of 60. Ritesh has 3 years to complete age of 60.

I alone is sufficient while II alone is not sufficient
II alone is sufficient while I alone is not sufficient
Either I or II is sufficient
Neither I nor II is sufficient
Both I and II are sufficient
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Clearly, the facts given in I and II contain two conditions to be fulfilled to get retirement and also indicate that Ritesh fulfills only one condition out of them.

There are problems with statement as well as others have pointed out. First, there is no mention of full pension benefits in office X rules.

Second, it doesn't mention on which year Ritesh has 3 years to complete 60 years. (Seems 2006 is implied but we can't be sure).

D is answer.

"II. As per office X rules, an employee has to complete minimum 30 years of service and attain age of 60".

Rules for what? Rules for retirement is not mentioned. We cannot assume in data sufficiency!

Statement 1 is not required here as it is mentioned in statement 2 that Ritesh is still 3 years remaining for 60 and this indicates that he cannot retire. Hence only statement 2 is sufficient.

Ritesh will complete 30 years of service in office X in April 2000.

The word "will" is very important.

It means date "now" is before April 2000 and at the moment Ritesh is age 60-3 = 57.

Only second statement is enough, because to get the pension one need to satisfy two conditions, from second statement itself it is clear that second condition is not met by him.

Answer should be 'B' because the question is "can he". Which can be answered from both? This is the most common mistake being made in these kinds of questions.

Let me try to explain.

Conclusion: Today Ritesh age = 57.

Combine I and II, we know that in 2006, Ritesh's age >60, work > 30 years, fulfil office X rule.

No current age is given. Also, no definition of how full pension benefits can be obtained. In addition, we have no idea if rules have changed at any given point.

The question is "Can he?".
And using both of these options we can say that he can't.
So basically, the question gets answered.

I think the answer should be B.

As from second statement alone we can say that ritesh has to wait three more years to retire.
