Question: How many pages of book X did Robert read on Sunday ?

Statements:

  1. The book has 300 pages out of which two-thirds were read by him before Sunday.
  2. Robert read the last 40 pages of the book on the morning of Monday.

I alone is sufficient while II alone is not sufficient
II alone is sufficient while I alone is not sufficient
Either I or II is sufficient
Neither I nor II is sufficient
Both I and II are sufficient
Answer: Option
Explanation:

From I and II, we find that Robert read (300 x 2/3) i.e. 200 pages before Sunday and the last 40 pages on Monday.

This means that he read [300 - (200 + 40)] i.e. 60 pages on Sunday.

He read 200 pages before Sunday so only 100 pages remain,
He read 100 page on Sunday and in 2 statements proper information is not given then how would we know that he talk about the upcoming Sunday?

Anyone, please explain me.

It's possible that nothing was read on Sunday, and he skipped to he end on Monday. Agreed.

So, it could be neither follows.

He also read between 12 am to 4 am on Sunday so how it is correct he read 60 pages on Sunday?

The question itself telling thar Robert did read on Sunday.

It is asking how many pages he read on Sunday. (Page no. is immaterial)

Before Sunday, he read -- 300*2/3=200 pages
Left with -- 300-200 =100 pages
And, on Monday, he read --40 pages (last pages)
So, on Sunday, he read --100-40=60 pages.

Agreed with @Tmtmtm.

I also have doubt.

He may have read only 20 pages till page number 220 on Sunday.

And continued with page number 260 Monday morning.

Any clarifications on this?
