Directions to Solve
In each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and
Give answer
- (A) If the data in statement I alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question
- (B) If the data in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement I alone are not sufficient to answer the question
- (C) If the data either in statement I alone or in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question
- (D) If the data given in both statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question and
- (E) If the data in both statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.

Question: What is the shortest distance between Devipur and Durgapur ?
Statements:
- Durgapur is 20 kms away from Rampur.
- Devipur is 15 kms away from Rampur.
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Clearly, the distance of each village from Rampur is given in I and II. But nothing about their relative positions is mentioned. So, the distance between the two villages cannot be calculated.

Answer should be E.
Durgapur = Rampur+20.
Devipur = Rampur+15.
Subtracting two equations we get.
Durgapur-Devipur = 5m, which means distance between them is 5kms.
Durgapur = Rampur+20.
Devipur = Rampur+15.
Subtracting two equations we get.
Durgapur-Devipur = 5m, which means distance between them is 5kms.

As it clearly says the shortest distance, so it should be E.

Why the answer e is not correct? Justify this.

Maybe the answer is correct.
Because we have to find the shortest distance.
So, now.
--> from Rampur, it takes 15 km to reach the entrance (starting point) of Devipur.
--> from Rampur it takes 20km to reach the entrance (starting point) of Durgapur.
So, now we don't know how big the village Devipur is (or) we don't know the ending point of the Devipur.
If we have an endpoint of Devipur we can calculate the shortest distance b/w Devipur and Durgapur.
ie, Shortest Distance=distance from the end of Devipur village to the entrance of Durgapur village (which will be (less than) < 5km).
So the answer is ~~~ D ~~~.
Thank you.

D is correct.
Because,
-> From Rampur it takes 15 kilometers to reach the ENTRANCE of (ex: Start point) Devipur.
-> From Rampur it takes 20 kilometers to reach the ENTRANCE of (ex: Start point) Durgapur.
Now to know the shortest distance b/w the Devipur and Durgapur.
-> Distance from ENTRANCE of Devipur to ENTRANCE of Durgapur = 5 kms.
But we have to find the shortest distance b/w the Devipur and Durgapur.
i.e 4 from END of Devipur to the ENTRANCE of the Durgapur which will be (< 5) less than 5.
AND now in the option II - Devipur start from 15 km far from Rampur but they say how far it is.
So the answer is D.

Probably because two distance comes from the equation.
Once when Durgapur and devipur are in the same direction then the answer comes 20-15=5.
Whereas on the other hand if they are in the opposite direction the answer comes 20+15=35.
I hope I am right.

I too agree (E) is correct Answer.

E is correct.
Distance = 15+20 = 35km.
Distance = 15+20 = 35km.

We got the distance after calculation as 5 km. But, we don't know whether it is the shortest distance or not. So, option D is correct.

It is a data sufficiency question the distance is given but the direction is not given in respect to it. That is why the answer is D.
