Liberate means free from oppression or from imprisonment or you were set free of slavery, then we use liberate but for extricate it is getting out of a difficult situation (may be anything) and setting free.

Extricate, in all essence, means to pull.

When you extricate you pull, the word does not go in relation to anything else.

E.G: extricate a tooth.
