Why not removed ?
Like when we say a distant cousin we may mean a cousin say twice removed.
Or when we say the administration of being too removed from the realities of the state we actually mean the administration is too distant.

Hey why can't it be removed and separated?
Because we have heard something like "that dress seems to be distant when compares to other dresses, because it is fade off".

Distant words we use for thoes places which are more away from us, and other words like separate we use for short distane. So that distant means far.

I feel distant has far and removed as its synonym. They are both right. Separated can also be right, depending not the sentence or phrase.
