Sterile means lacking of productivity in crops. Its not related to humans so its not childless. So it is barren.

Arid and Dry means almost the same i.e. dry and childless means unable to produce offspring. Point is that at the base line there lies a fact that sterile "means unable to produce anything" i.e.its like barren, barren in terms of not producing a child, barren in terms of not producing seed or fruit, barren land, barren in terms of lacking in creativity.
