I think the right sentence is " students were awaiting the arrival of the chief guest" we cant use THE before students.

It does nt make any sense. Is there any query please send me.

It should be 'waiting'. We use 'await' for non-living objects. Here the object is living i.e. the guest. Therefore, we will use 'waiting for'. Hope it helps. Thank you.

Examples of await in a sentence.

A crowd of people awaited the train.
We're eagerly awaiting his arrival.

Obsolete : to lie in wait for.

I think after we using await, preposition is not required.
If wait is used, the preposition is required.
(for is a preposition)

'awaiting' is kind of more formal. Don't use 'for' after it. More like 'awaiting the arrival' not 'awaiting for the arrival.

The answer is "awaiting" and it is meaningless if it is "awaiting for" as 'awaiting' and 'waiting for' both means the same.

If we use the wait then you can use waiting according to the sentence but when we use await then never use ing form.

Waiting is correct. It can be awaiting in case if there is adverb before it like eagerly awaiting for the arrival.

There is no error "awaiting" itself include the meaning of "for" that's why "for" is incorrect in this sentence.

Perhaps "waiting for" could be far better option. But we are to deal with "Awaiting" here.
