Await means wait for substitute the terms 'wait for' instead of await. The sentence turns out to be like this students were waiting for for the arrival of chief guest. These are called errors of redundancy. The same will follow the verbs like

Return=come back.

Revert=send back.

Discuss=talk about.

Awaiting means waiting for so awaiting for is only a redundancy.

If we remove "for" the sentence is in a improper form.....

Awaiting the arrival or waiting for the arrival.

Awaiting is never followed by for because it includes for in itself.

There is no error "awaiting" itself include the meaning of "for" that's why "for" is incorrect in this sentence.

Awaiting means waiting for, so need not be used both awaiting and for at a time in sentence.

If we use Awaiting it means Waiting for. And we already have for in the sentece. So it is wrong!

If we use the wait then you can use waiting according to the sentence but when we use await then never use ing form.
