The number, this number, that number and the lot, this lot, that lot take SINGULAR verbs.

'A number' takes PLURAL verbs.

You are right, it is always the marks and marks is already a reference to a number.

It is not because of number indicating singularity. Rather it's because of 'each' in the sentence. After 'each', 'every' you have to use singular verb.

You are correct, "each" always follows a singular verb.
