Here is a sentence "one of the hundreds" it sounds like a singular so we use was in the place of were.

The 1st subject here is one which is singular. And the verb should be according to the 1st subject in "of" type of sentences "one of hundreds" for ex each of the following followed by helping verb is not are.

There should be "none".
"not one" doesn't sound good.
"neither" is used in case of two people.
