A group of friends means they. So it should be followed by plural (want).

It is obviously want as it is plural. Why wants I don't understand.

SHANTAM said:   1 decade ago
It should be "WANT" only not WANTS.

It should be want as a group becomes collectively singular.

It should be wants.

A group of friends is treated as singular because they all are doing same work at same time so it should be wants.

"Group" is singular (collective noun). Similar to "team" as "the team is going abroad" (not 'are going'). So it is WANTS.

It would have been "want" if the sentence was "the friends want to visit".

But since "group" is singular (as it is only one group), therefore it should be "wants".

A group of friends here group is a singular number. Like a bag of fruits. It should be wants.
