Came upon is a phrase which means to find someone, so here police came upon the robbers.

If we use broke then we have to write "broke into".

The lonely place?
The is used when you know the exact place, so the lonely place is wrong, a lonely place is correct. Came upon, broke upon are phrases, so it's good to use any of those two.
