The lonely place?

The is used when you know the exact place, so the lonely place is wrong, a lonely place is correct. Came upon, broke upon are phrases, so it's good to use any of those two.

At should be used in place of in.

If we use broke then we have to write "broke into".

Because "broke into" is a phrase.

Came upon is a phrase which means to find someone, so here police came upon the robbers.

'broke upon' has the same meaning as 'came upon'.
