The cause is "many a time". But why not had been? Can anybody explain, please?

Many a time shows continuation from the past to present so for such purpose we use perfect continuous tense so " have been" is used ie here many a time shows a period of time or duration of time.

Yes, had been will be the correct one. Because continuation had finished. The sentence is in past form.

We cannot tell that Now he is not there here. So we have to use present tense Only.
