For the best of my knowledge "from" is a preposition so that where ever we will write we have to write "free from". Because it is a fixed preposition. We cannot write separately these two words. You can also search so many fixed preposition in the Grammar.

The difference between these two terms "Free now" and "now free" is as follows:
When you say "now free from, " the word from joins free with person or organisation, for example.
India is now free from British rule (Here from is linking free and British rule).
When Britishers left India and we got independence, we can write:
India is now free or India is free now.

Tell me 1thing as in past continuous we use was with ing. Then why in 2nd sentence with was we don't use ing.
