If there is a two happened things in the sentence, the first happened in past perfect and second is in the simple past right, in that case here first part is wrong. And what it is 'length' there why not 'lengthy'.

At great Length is not the correct one, it is both gramatically and sentense wise coreect.

'great' is superfluously used here. Still I have confusion in B &C "but I was not the wiser " the wiser is also not correct.
