@All.
It's the rule that if you add a suffix with "-ou-" in it, you drop the previous "u", like this:
rigour --> rigorous
labour --> laborious
flavour --> flavorous
There are some other cases where you drop the "u", as in "generous" --> "generosity", but note that those are also the correct spellings in American English.
You don't drop the "u" with most other suffixes:
favour --> favourable.
colour --> colourful.
