Since doesn't sound good. In my opinion, It should be like this.

Yes, I would also prefer, @Ragavanda said since is apt, but look at the gerund he had added, Recover"ing", but here it is recover"ed".

I would prefer that 'then' is the most appropriate word as if we read it as a reported indirect speech.
