Here, In this sentence, past indefinite conditional sentence Rule applied.

The Correct answer is D. There shouldn't be any improvement in the sentence.
He sent a word is correct as it is.
In this context, a word is a statement made by some. If we are to say he sent word it is not grammatically correct.
