A and few are not singular ; few means more than one.
It is not as some suger considering some as singular as some suger means as an uncountable noun and quantity.

Both 'a few' and 'few' mean 'some'. But we use 'a few' in a positive sense and 'few' in a negative sense.

Few means not many used in negative sense and a few means small but used in positive sense.

Both is write - a few -few-, we can use both as few is used for countable noun.

Few means many whereas 'a few' means more than one but in small amount.
